Rare antique Caucasian Karabagh carpet with floral motifs, called “Gul Farangi” (literally “foreign flowers”), knotted in 1910, as indicated by the date on the carpet.
After the occupation of Karabagh, these carpets were commissioned, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, by the nobility and the tsarist upper class from the highly skilled local Caucasian weavers, in the floral style of French Western carpets. In those years, in fact, the style of the French nobility was very fashionable, among whom, in fact, the carpets of the Aubusson and Savonerie factories were in use.
The design of the carpet is literally characterized by a cascade of garlands composed of bouquets of flowering roses which, unlike the traditional black background of these rare carpets, here are arranged on a very elegant indigo / midnight blue background, resulting in an elegant absolutely unique overall.
At the base of one of the two short sides, two stylized zoomorphic figures, typical of Caucasian culture and tradition, have been inserted.
The frame takes up exactly the same motif as the field, distinguishing itself, however, for the generous use of light blue.
The date of knotting was inscribed in one of its corners: 1910.
The wool used has an exceptional softness and silkiness, proof of a prestigious client.
